Why Buy Local?
Buying local helps the small business owner, but more importantly, buying local helps you. More money circulating in the San Antonio economy benefits everyone living here. Our schools are better, our charities have more money to give back to our community and our government has the necessary revenues to improve our infrastructure.
It has been shown that locally owned stores spend proportionately more on payroll than chains and that buying local will save jobs. Plus, for every $100 spent at a locally owned store, $45 remains in the local economy, compared with about $13 per $100 spent at a big box, according to research by the nonprofit Institute for Local Self-Reliance and Austin (Tex.) consulting firm Civic Economics. That's because independents tend to do their purchasing locally, while chains usually centralize it from a head office.
Building A Strong Local Economy
Independent local businesses employ a wide array of supporting services. They hire accountants, lawyers, web designers, sign makers and contractors for construction. Opportunities grow for local accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants, attorneys, advertising agencies and others to help run it. Local retailers and distributors also carry a higher percentage of locally-made goods than the chains, creating more jobs for local producers.
Consumers want to buy into products and brands that foster and support the lifestyle-oriented communities they value. Buying local gives them the direct link to extend and expand into their own community, empowering them and giving them the sense of belonging. As our community or any community confronts difficult economic times, every dollar we spend counts towards bolstering the economy and when you spend those dollars buying local products or services, it is one of the most important contributions we can make for our community.
Where we shop, where we eat and have fun - all of it makes San Antonio home. Our distinctive San Antonio character is an integral part of the Alamo City. There is economic research that says that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. It may not always be possible to buy local, but we ask you to think local first.
